“Macbeth” opened up to a full house at Lucas Theater on Thursday, Feb. 25. The Performing Arts department presents the 90-minute Shakespeare-adapted play, directed by Mark Tymchyshyn.
“Macbeth” is the tragic story of a man who through a struggle of morality, ethics and gruesome battle scenes pursues his prophecy of becoming king. Macbeth fulfills the visions of the three witches through betrayal, manipulation, disloyalty and deceitfulness. As the play continues Macbeth and his wife, Lady Macbeth, are overwhelmed with guilt and shame as they live their lives in power.
The actors certainly become and own their characters. Kelly Rogers, who plays the deceitful and cruel wife Lady Macbeth, shows the passionate yet callous side of a wife who desires to see her husband’s destiny fulfilled. Macbeth, played by Daniel Molina, at once grasps the audience attention as the power driven, guilt stricken warrior who kills rulers standing in his way to become king and even has his closest companion Banquo, played by Romell Witherspoon killed.
The production design of this of this play is depicted futuristically with heavy metal work, along with heavy music, dramatic use of light and fog and the warrior style costuming. Through these modernized elements and the talents of the actors, director and a host of other collaborations, “Macbeth” is a huge success.
“Macbeth” will continue to show this weekend from the Feb. 26 and 27 at 8 p.m., and Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. A performance will occur on March 4 that is only free for anyone with a valid SCAD ID. Tickets are $15 for the general public and $5 for anyone with a valid SCAD ID, seniors, military and students present ID at the box office for tickets.
