Name: Victoria Wilmoth
Major: Fashion Design
Hometown: Indiana, Pa.
District: What the inspiration behind your collection?
Victoria Wilmoth: My inspiration was birds of prey. I basically got that idea from the beginning of “Burlesque.” I went more in depth with the use of feathers. I grew up in Colorado as a skier. One of the skis used by the US Olympic team is called “The Birds of Prey,” so through “Burlesque” and feathers it eventually went into this birds of prey idea, taking on a deeper meaning for me.
District: Was this a concept you’ve had in your head for a while?
Wilmoth: Well, the “Burlesque” idea I had since early summer. While looking at old photos of my childhood which reminded me of skiing, my concepts of burlesque and the birds of prey just came together and became my inspiration.
District: When did you decide to pursue a degree in fashion?
Wilmoth: Well, ever since I was really little, I wanted to do fashion design. It started with making Barbie clothes for my own dolls with my grandma. So when my grandma showed me how to sew, from then on I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer.
District: What are your future plans after graduation?
Wilmoth: I will hopefully venture into the bridal industry.
District: Do you have any advice for the upcoming seniors starting off on their own collections?
Wilmoth: Fabric sourcing. Get lots and lots of swatches. I was chosen for the mentor program, and Maggie [Norris] really took me under her wing and helped in deciding on what fabric to choose.
District: Speaking of Maggie Norris, how was it working with her?
Wilmoth: She’s marvelous, I love her to death. She’s the definition of elegance. She’s just really amazing.
District: How do you categorize your design aesthetic?
Wilmoth:I’ve always been couture or bridal focused. Ready-to-wear’s just not my forté.
District: Who would be your dream designer to work with and why?
Wilmoth: Elie Saab. He’s just amazing at everything he does. There’s not one collection that I can say I didn’t like. They’re all gorgeous.Contact Katie Schliep .
