On May 12, 19 people were wounded in a shooting during the New Orleans Mother’s Day Parade. Police have identified the suspect as Akein Scott, 19, who has a prior rap sheet. There is no clear motive, and authorities are still seeking Scott’s arrest.
Dr. Kermit Gosnell has been convicted on three counts of first-degree murder. Gosnell has been on trial since March for aborting babies in their third trimester, conducting operations in unsanitary conditions, and operating without proper certification. Next week, jurors will decide whether Gosnell will face life in prison or the death penalty.
The Department of Defense is looking into new measures to prevent sexual misconduct within the military after several cases involving recruit abuse have garnered media attention. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is looking into additional preventative measures to rid the ranks of sexual assault.
Eight people were arrested for prostitution near the 41st and 42nd block of Jefferson and Bull Streets by undercover police officers on May 15. The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department will continue investigating the crime.
Dennis Gregory Johnson, 22, has been charged with false report of a crime, false statements, and possession of marijuana. Johnson originally told police that two men had shot him on his porch during a robbery. Police later determined that Johnson had shot himself and brought him to the Chatham County Detention Center after being treated at Memorial University Medical Center.
