Girl Scout Cookie Season Kick-Off

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis weekend kicked off the Girl Scout cookie season in Pooler. Cases of cookies were stacked and organized, by cookie type and troop number, then distributed among troop leader according to their troop’s sales.

“Selling cookies really teaches our girls great life skills,” said Jessie Dial, the Director of Sales for the Northern Georgia area.  “We call them the 5 Skills.”  The five skills include goal setting, decision-making, money management, people skills, and finally, business ethics.  These five skills were showcased on numerous posters, the Girl Scouts website, as well as on every case of cookies handed out Saturday morning.

The Girl Scouts of America currently reach out to more than 3.2 million girls and young women across America. Proceeds from cookie sales help fund projects for individual troops but also help to fund literacy programs from girls around the world.

“Cookie season is a big deal to us,” said Tara Nobles, the Creative Senior Services Manager for the Savannah Girl Scout council, as well as a SCAD alumni.  “The revenue from cookie sales helps to pay for each troops outings.  A lot of the time they end up spending money to come down to Savannah to see the Birthplace.”

P2080008Savannah was the original site for the Girl Scouts of America, and also home to its founder, Juliette Gordon Low.  Last year, renovations to the façade began on the Birthplace, which now serves as a museum and archive for the Girl Scouts of America. The construction is set to complete this spring.

“It is always a positive thing for us because we get to see what the girls do with their cookie money first hand,” said Marisa Del Vale, tour guide at the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace.  “Even some of the resources we use in the programs we offer were created using cookie money.”

Along with a new CEO, there are some new cookies on the block.  Two cookies are debuting this season, the gluten free Chocolate Chip Shortbread, and the GMO free Cranberry Citrus Crips.  Unfortunately, neither will be available for purchase in Savannah this season.

Local booth sales will take place from Feb. 14 – March 9 and can be found via the new Cookie locator app available for iOS and Android phones.
